CRANES COACH SEARCH; Europeans Battling To manage Uganda Cranes

  • Claude Marie Francois Le Roy

French born tactician Claude Marie Francois Le Roy and Joao Miguel de Castro Ferreira (Portugal) are among the many coaches to apply to take up the Uganda Cranes job.

A close source in the Uganda FA confirmed to URN on Thursday that the experienced Le Roy is among the high profile coaches to apply.

"He is among the many coaches to apply for the job together with other coaches from Italy and two from Kenya,"  added the source. Le Roy who guided Cameroon to win the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations and Oman to 2009 Gulf Cup of Nations has also handled Senegal, Ghana, Congo Brazzaville, DR Congo and Togo.

The 69 year old has also coached in China, England and the middle East among others. He was in-charge of Togo when the Cranes beat them in preliminary round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Portugal's 34-year old Ferreira, a UEFA A qualified coach who has experience working in Portugal and Saudi Arabia has also reportedly applied for the job. " I cannot tell you who has applied for the job yet," Uganda FA Chief Executive Officer, Edgar Suubi Watson told URN.

The post fell vacant after Serbian born coach Milutin 'Micho'Sredojevic terminated his contract two months ago over unpaid salary arrears. The FA later appointed assistant coach Moses Basena to work on an interim basis.

But the FA opened for applications to be received between October 23-29th before the new coach is announced on November 15th. CAF technical committee chairman and former Zambia FA President Kalusha Bwalya is the head of the committee that will vet the coaches who will apply before the executive Committee of the FA make the final decision on who will coach the team.
