Robert Mugabe resigns as Zimbabwe's president

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has announced his resignation after nearly four decades as the country's leader, the parliament speaker has announced.

Cheers broke out in Zimbabwe's parliament after speaker Jacob Mudenda read out Mugabe's resignation letter.

"I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation ... with immediate effect," said Mudenda, reading the letter.

The news also sparked celebrations on the streets of the capital, Harare, Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reported.

Following Mugabe's letter, impeachment proceedings in parliament were suspended.

Mugabe, 93, led Zimbabwe since independence in 1980.
