Why did Gen. Muntu call news conference? Supporters question defeated FDC President's next move

Gen. Mugisha Muntu left many dissapointed after a press conference dubbed 'breaking announcement' failed to yield the breaking story journalists and expectant population waited for since the election outcome.

Gen. Muntu who was defeated by Patrick Oboi Amuriat in the FDC Presidential elections held at Namboole over the weekend, attributed his loss to Dr. Kizza Besigye's weight in his challenger's campaign.

The former army commander called a news conference in Kampala with many claiming he was quitting the party to start his own.

Gen. Muntu largely used the language of consultation rather than what many expected of him.

He said: "Whatever we do will be in the open. I have no problem with Oboi, I will be open to him all the time."

The outgoing FDC President, said: "I am transparent. I am a democrat. Whatever we do will be for improving FDC."

Several of his supporters watching the live news conference on TV expected him to throw the towel and set up his own party.

He was cited with singer turned politician Bobi Wine and the excitement of a new party featured in many peoples' talk in bars, homes and offices.

Gen. Muntu was in the company of leader of opposition Winnie Kiiza, party chief whip Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Kasese MP Robert Centenary and Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga among other party faithful.
