President Yoweri Museveni told the nation police has been infiltrated by weevils after dismissing Gen. Kale Kayihura and Gen. Henry Tumukunde in a sweeping mini reshuffle.
Police were left with a choice to reorganise under the new police chiefs named by President Museveni to start uprooting the weevils.
The President named John Martins Ochola Okoth as IGP and deputized by Sabiti Mzei and will be tasked to begin works on how to rid police of the weevils.
It appears the duo of Okoth and Mzei have not waited to settle in to start the big task.
The pair have tasked new RPC Kampala Metropolitan Police South ACP. Denis Namuwoza to get the job started.
And ACP. Namwoza has indeed embarked on the assignment by combing city streets in bid to sweep them of ‘kifeesi’ criminals.
Divisions under Kampala Metropolitan South have since Friday commenced on stingy operations against the famous ‘kifesi’ criminals terrorizing and disorganising the public during business hours. This comes after various complaints of bag and phone snatching, drug abuse,simple robberies around the City and during traffic rush hour times.
ACP. Namuwoza is being assisted by crime preventers. These operations are majorly focusing on areas around Katwe, Mini Price, Ben Kiwanuka, Market Street, Clock Tower Nakivubo Channel, Makindye, Salaama, Kibuye and Ndejje.
Namuwoza said the criminal gangs penetrating the city make it hard for the public to conduct their businesses normally.
“This is the time to bring back sanity in the city so that people can stop living in fear,” he said.
With the assistance from local leaders, over 300 suspects including those on police watchlist have been arrested,subjected to screening and are to be arraigned before courts of law.
However the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire explained that however much police is doing its role of arresting criminals, there is still a challenge of courts releasing them immediately back to the communities which undermines the efforts of the well intended operations.
