The embattled Lt Gen Tumukunde has filed a fresh application to the high court asking for ease and relaxation on his bail terms after he failed to secure army generals to stand for him as directed by the court.

His lawyers led by Anthony Wameli and Geoffrey Turyamusiima filed an application asking High Court in Kampala to ease the conditions set for his bail.

On April 14, Justice Wilson Kwesiga dismissed his bail application on grounds that he needed to present at least two sureties, either at his rank of a Lieutenant General-Lt Gen or higher General.

The presidential contender had presented  Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu, the leader of Alliance for National Transformation party-ANT, Salaam Musumba, FDC vice-chairperson Eastern Uganda, his wife Stella Tumukunde and brother Hannington Karuhanga, as his sureties who were all discarded.

In his latest petition, the Lt Gen has asked the high court to review and amend the rigid bail terms as he was unable to meet these requirements as directed.

His Lawyersargue that his three sureties including his wife, family friend Matthew Rukikaire and brother hang are substantial.

In the application, Gen Tumukunde contends that having such sureties is impossible because senior officers are still serving in the army or in government making it impractical to stand surety for him especially now that he is charged with treason.

Tumukunde is still on remand at Luzira prison where he has been since March 2020, on treason charges, unlawful possession of firearms, and ammunition.
