Five people in Bugembe town council , Jinja are in trouble for smoking Shisha behind the premises of Trek-bar and Lounge.

The suspects who were picked up on Monday night in a joint operation act by police and Uganda National Health Consumer’s Organization-UNHCO to crackdown on bars violating the Tobacco Control .

They have been identified as Godfrey Tumusiime, Maureen Kwagala, Ali Maganda, Andrew Ssali and Julius Kiyinji.

Shisha was declared illegal after the enactment of the Anti-Tobacco Law of 2015, which restricts the use of Tobbaco and its products. Those found in position of Shisa are liable to three months imprisonment or a fine of Shillings 480,000 upon conviction.

Moses Talibita, the Legal Officer UNHCO, says the bar owners were warned before the operation ,but they remained adamant. “We warned the bar owners and advised them to stop selling Shisha but they kept on denying it and last night we decided to arrest them,” Talibita told our reporter.

Sam Talemwa, the Officer in Charge of Bugembe police station, says they also recovered two Shisha pots from the bar during the operation.

He says they have commenced investigations and that the suspects will be paraded before in court once investigations are complete.
