Probably the youngest if not one of the youngest kings in the world today, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV is sick and tired of uncensored comedy skits performed by some of our talented young funny men and women.

King Oyo made the daunting revelation after he attended one of his friend’s ( Mr Hassan Bassajjabalaba)birthday party and witnessed comedians like Mad Rat and Chiko pull off unbecoming jokes about people’s tribes and feeding revelers with uncensored content.

The King went ahead to appreciate the role that the comedy industry has played in trying to reduce the problem of unemployment but also went ahead to advise comedians to incorporate educative content in their scripts.

Below is King Oyo’s long post criticizing vulgar comedians

Why are Ugandan comedians so vulgar?

I was disappointed in the majority of Ugandan comedians most of whom were very vulgar while on a comic stage. I witnessed this while in attendance of a close friend’s birthday party ,Mr Hassan Bassajjabalaba’s ( KIU proprietor) where he invited comedians to grace the party.
There is no doubt that the comedy industry has grown tremendously over the years. Thanks to the numerous platforms, upcoming comedians now have avenues to showcase their talents.

Consequently, there has been an increase in the number of comedians. If well supported, comedy has the potential, to some extent, solve the problem of unemployment.

While comedians have managed to make us laugh, I doubt if they have, in the process, taught us anything new. This begs the question: What is the role of a comedian in a society?

It is easy to say to make people laugh; it appears to be obvious. But is that their sole role? Or is there more to it?

In my opinion, it ought to be more than just making people laugh. Comedians, like other artists, should criticise, educate, and entertain.

I have had an opportunity to listen to some of our celebrated comedians. Most of their jokes are not funny at all, neither do they excite an intelligent mind. Most of them dwell on tribal ascents and stereotypes targeted at members of certain communities. As a result, our comedians have become a predictable loot.

Even worse, some of our comedians, in their efforts to sound funny, distort English words not knowing that a majority of their fans are school-going children. Comedians should do more than make us laugh.
FINALLY,when a positive message is absent and all that is left is vulgarity for vulgarity’s sake, then comedy loses all of its value, killing one of our most precious artforms.
