Police in kisoro district has in custody three people for attempting to traffic Crested Cranes to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The suspects Dan Iradukunda 22 a resident of Bunagana in Muramba Sub County, George Habyarimana 25, a resident of Gahiza in Buhozi parish Busanza Sub County and Hillary Tumushime, 28 a Boda Boda cyclist at Bunagana stage in Bunagana town board are being held at Kisoro Police Station as investigations go on.
Samuel Amanya, Chief Warden Mughinga National Park says that they have received complaints of people trafficking Crested Cranes to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Christopher Ruhunde, Kisoro District Police Commander, says that the two suspects Iradukunda and Habyarimana confessed to selling the created cranes to one Congolese woman at 150,000 shillings each.
The suspects will face court once investigations are finalized.
Chosen as Uganda’s national symbol almost 100 years ago, the Crested Crane is one of the most appreciated birds in the country.
