A tycoon in Kabale district has been locked up for reportedly aiding Rwandan nationals to obtain Ugandan National Identity cards.

Denis Tukamushaba alias Chicharito resident of Bufuka village in Kitumba Sub County and Proprietor of Eagle Tours and Travel is accused of illegally dealing with a section of NIRA officials in Kabale to process and distribute Ugandan Identity cards.

Tukamushaba was detained after Kabale police summoned him.

Trouble for Tukamushaba started after one of his Rwandan customers, a woman identified Josian was captured in Kisoro district trying to flee Uganda with two national identity cards for Rwanda and Uganda.

A panicking Josian wasted no time to reveal the name of her Ugandan dealer who aided the procurement of her Identity card to the Kisoro police operatives.

His lawyer Bruno Kukundankwe Beitwenda, narrated that his client was summoned to Kabale Central Police Station for an unspecified interview but upon his arrival, he was handcuffed before being whisked off to the unknown destination.

Kukundankwe explained that present at the CPS Kabale was the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department-OC, Joel Ntabu, and the Kigezi Regional Police Commander, Dan Byaruhanga who reportedly handed over the suspect to operatives from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence- CMI.

Kukundakwe said that he has been liaising with security officials to secure the release of his client on bond or ensure that he is produced in court.

The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate declined to comment on the matter when approached by our reporter, saying it is beyond him.
