The health ministry is grappling with an inadequate number of health workers needed for COVID-19 surveillance at the Busia and Malaba border points.
Dr Tony Wabwire, the in-charge of Busia Border Point Health Facility says only six health alongside volunteers from the Uganda Red Cross work in shifts workers at the Busia Border is currently, conducting the screening exercise.
This poses a grave risk to the country as the majority of people crossing into Uganda are not being screened.
Meanwhile Malaba border in Tororo district, many people are crossing from Kenya to Uganda and there are only two health workers at the screening point.
David Ochieng, a health worker at the Malaba border says that the members of staff at the border and inadequate and get exhausted quickly.
He also said they have six Red Cross volunteers, who are only supposed to mobilize people for the screening, guide them at the handwashing facilities.
So far seven countries neighboring Uganda have reported confirmed cases of the COVID-19 including Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan , Rwanda Ethiopia , DRC, Egypt.
Uganda shares land border crossings with Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and the DRC. Direct bus services connect the major cities in each country (with the exception of DRC).
