The Electoral Commission, the body responsible for organizing general elections in Uganda has detached itself from referring to the revised roadmap and the entire electoral process as scientific.

The EC maintains this forthcoming general election is like any other with the same process except for no public rallies.

The Electoral Commission chairman Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi recently unveiled a new digitalized road map indicating that they were pushing ahead with the 2021 elections despite the threat from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Under the roadmap, all mass rallies and public meetings were banned and candidates have only been allowed to campaign through digital platforms like radios, TVs’, social media among others.

Now Jotham Taremwa, the Electoral Commission spokesperson says the word science doesn’t apply and it is it is misleading to the voters to call the 2021 elections scientific.

EC chairperson, Byabakama has also defended the use of media platforms like radio and television stations to conduct campaigns as the only option during this period of the COVID 19 pandemic.

Byabakama has criticized politicians out at those who accuse the EC of acting outside the constitution saying it is their mandate within

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni first started using the word scientific when he referred Marriage and Burials with a limited crowd of up to 10 and 30 people respectively.
