The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has urged Ugandans and security agencies to exercise peace and restraint during the campaign period that leads to the 2021 general polls.
A scanty number of about 20 MPs were in parliament to pay tribute to the Kamuli Municipality Legislator Rehema Wetongola who succumbed to COVID-19 last week.
The speaker while presiding over parliament condemned the violence and brutality that has cropped up from both presidential candidates and their supporters.
”I want to call upon the candidates to reign in their supporters and encourage them to exercise restraint indulging in destructive activities which will result in further loss of lives and property as well as livelihoods. I want also to appeal to the various state agencies to exercise restraint from violating Human rights.”Kadaga said
Legislators also reacted angrily to the riots that have rocked Kampala and other parts of the country following the brutal arrest of the Kyadondo East Legislator Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert aka Bobi wine in luuka district on Wednesday.
Asuman Basalirwa the JEEMA party president says Kyagulanyi has been denied access to meeting anyone including his lawyers and family which raises a lot of suspicions. He says Kyagulanyi’s constitutional rights are being violated.
Latif Sebbagala has asked parliament to investigate the number of people that died. He says police could be underreporting the deaths because violent protests broke out across the country and there are reports that people were equally gunned down outside Kampala.
Godfrey Macho the Busia Mp says both police and the EC are releasing contradictory statements which are tarnishing the reputation of the ruling NRM party,
Parts of Kampala and other districts were littered with blood, garbage, and burning tyres as NUP supporters took to the streets in solidarity against Bobi’s detention.
Police revealed that 7 people were confirmed dead after being gunned down while over 40 sustained injuries, in addition to arrests made.
Among leaders arrested during the running battles on Wednesday and Thursday are Mathius Mpuuga –MP Masaka, Rosemary Namayanja Woman MP Masaka, Kawempe North Mp candidate Muhammed Segirinya, DP national vise chair Mukassa Mbidde among others.
