Kyotera district has lost its Woman Member of Parliament Robinah Ssentongo.
Sentongo succumbed to COVID -19 on Friday morning after spending close to one week in admission at International Hospital Kampala- IHK hospital in Kampala before being taken to Aghakhan Nairobi for further treatment.
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga while opening the Friday Parliamentary sitting made the unfortunate announcement.
She then asked the house to observe a moment of silence as she deferred the procedure of holding a special session for the deceased.
‘‘As we convene today, parliament has suffered another tragedy, Hon Robinah Ssentongo the MP for Kyotera has passed away this morning , so I would like to invite members to stand up for a minute of silence…, honorable members our colleague has passed on due to covid so we shall not be bringing her body here .”the speaker of parliament said.
Ssentengo was the first woman MP of Kyotera and a Democratic Party DP member who was leaning toward the people power pressure group.
In August this year, Sentongo had announced that she wouldn’t stand on a DP ticket again because her contribution wasn’t appreciated by the top leadership, which instead chose to insults her character.
“I had earlier expressed interests in holding the party ticket again, but to my disappointment, before even my application was considered by the Secretary-General, then I received disturbing abuses from the President General who described me as a useless fellow. This was a great shock to me that I sensibly had to reconsider my loyalty to them,” she said.
However, it seems like her differences with the Democratic Party had been resolved as she was contesting for the same seat in the forthcoming 2021 general election.
She becomes the third MP to succumb to COVID-19 after her counterparts Rehema Watongola (Kamuli) and Faith Alupo (Pallisa) died of the disease recently.
Uganda now has 28,733 Covid-19 cases and 255 deaths.
