The Uganda joint Christian religious council has asked parliament to amend the constitution postponing the elections for 3 years with Museveni as president.

The group led by the Kampala Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga says the laxity and unwillingness by politicians during the ongoing campaigns not adhering to the required SOP’s is leading to a surge in COVID-19 infections.

UJCC says police have also continued to exert unnecessary force on civilians by brutalizing them while enforcing COVID19 guidelines.

They claim opposition candidates are also interrupted and restricted during campaigns.

The clergy insists that the constitution can be amended to give room to the president to extend his reign for an extra 3 years.

Currently, the constitution states that if elections are extended and a state of emergency is declared, then the speaker of parliament automatically becomes the interim president.

However, the religious leaders propose that article 256 of the constitution gives room for parliament to amend the constitution.

‘’We are asking parliament to seat down and amend the constitution, to allow president Museveni to continue ruling and guiding the country, during the 3 years elections are postponed,’’

Covid 19 cases in Uganda currently stands at 27,532 infections with 228 deaths.

Meanwhile public and private hospitals are full to capacity with limited oxygen provision.
