John Magufuli died Wednesday, 17 March at a Hospital in Dare-salaam.

Vice president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, addressed the nation saying: “It is with deep regret that I inform you that today… we lost our brave leader, the president of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli.”

President Magufuli was also known around the world for his views on the novel coronavirus, which he called “a devil” that “cannot survive the body of Christ.”

He declared Tanzania “covid-19 free” in June 2020 and the country has not released any new data on their case numbers since May 2020.

Magufuli had not been seen in public since 27 February, with his political opposition claiming he had contracted covid although this has not been confirmed.

Ms Hassan will now be sworn in as the new president and will serve for the remainder of Magufuli’s five-year term.
