Speaker-ship Elections
All the sworn-in MPs will converge on Monday 24th May 2021 in the first sitting of the 11th Parliament to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker on an occasion graced by President Yoweri Museveni.
However, as a requirement, all legislators and journalists covering the event at Kololo Ceremonial grounds must do Covid 19 test.
The exercise that started yesterday at parliament for MPs and the Gallery for journalists is expected to end today Friday 21st May 2021.
This comes after the conclusion of the swearing-in process where a total of 529 MP elects took oaths to office in the 11th parliament.
Speaker-ship Elections
During the 4-day exercise, each MP took the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament.
According to the public relations officer parliament, Hellen Kawessa, it is mandatory that all members attending the 1st sitting undergo the covid-19 test.
She adds that it would be absurd for members to miss the 1st business of parliament just because they didn’t get tested.
Former Speaker race, Rebecca Kadaga, and Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, FDC’s Semmujju Nganda, and independent Juliet Kinyamatamma have all declared their bid.
However, the NRM is currently holding primaries, and the Central Executive Committee -CEC is expected to either nominate a candidate or announce elections for Speaker and deputy.
Meanwhile, those in the race for deputy speaker include Muhammad Nsereko (Kampala Central), Thomas Tayebwa (Ruhinda North)NRM, Anita Among (Bukedea Woman)NRM, Jacob Oboth (West Budama Central)NRM, Robina Rwakoojo (Gomba West) NRM and Denis Oguzu LeeFDC.
