Muhammad Nsereko has told National Unity Platform enthusiasts that the arrest of blogger Fred Lumbuye in Turkey is justified.

Fred Lumbuye was picked by security agents as he returned to his residence on Tuesday evening last week in Turkey. But people close to him say he was arrested by the Ugandan embassy in Turkey as he tried to renew his passport.

Minister of state for foreign affairs last week told the media, the Turkish based blogger was in their possession and destined for deportation to Uganda.

However, Police mouthpiece Fred Enanga while addressing a news conference in Kampala, dismissed the allegations that Lumbuye was in their custody. Prominent among them is pronouncing President Yoweri Museveni dead of Covid-19.

Enanga went ahead to confirm they have lined up 15 cases against him, once he is flown into the country and handed to them.

Muhammad Nsereko, the Kampala Central MP appeared on NBS Barometer show on Tuesday night, asserting that the nature of Lumbuye’s crime allow him to be arrested in any part of the world.

Muhammad Nsereko submitted: “Lumbuye committed crime out of Uganda’s jurisdiction but on the internet, you don’t have to be within jurisdiction . The government is allowed to get you wherever you are.”

The legislator stated: “We don’t want Lumbuye to be mistreated but he needs to be brought to order. He has come out to speak on behalf of NUP, the party should have responded if they are not for what he says.”

Muhammad Nsereko, a lawyer by profession, argued: “People should understand that you are solely responsible for the information you produce. In the enjoyment of your right, you have no right to violate other people’s rights.”

He went on: “Lumbuye and his colleagues have resorted to what they do so as to get more views so as to earn.”

The former NRM legislator turned independent, said: “I want to tell our people, social media is like a menu, you have to select what is good for you. Lumbuye should get a fair trial but can his victims also get justice?”

Muhammad Nsereko contended: “Lumbuye is a suspect. It is the courts to determine whether he is guilty. Lumbuye does what he does to taste patience. He did this long time ago and they were quiet until their turn reached.”

He dismissed: “I don’t agree with calling Lumbuye a human rights activist. There is no human rights activist that calls for the killing of another person and violation of rights of others.”

NUP on Lumbuye arrest

NUP secretary general, David Lewis Rubongoya on Lumbuye’s arrest, stated: “We are not saying that Fred Lumbuye is a perfect person. We are not even saying that he has not made some mistakes in the course of his work. In fact, we do not necessarily agree with everything he does.”

NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, said: “The governments of the world ought to protect the rights of political dissidents and exiles who have sought refuge in their countries.”

He added: “Like we have been advocating for the rights of all Ugandans who have been subjected to the regime injustices, the same applies to Lumbuye. His opinions don’t represent NUP’s official position. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. We come in whenever need arises two give guidance.”
