Muhoozi has told Parliament that the people behind murders in Masaka region aim at instilling fear.

Politicians led by leader of opposition Mathias Mpuuga, have been out and about raising concern about the continued killings and the need for government to act.

The State Minister for Internal Affairs, Gen David Muhoozi presented a statement on the floor of Parliament on the organized crime and killings of persons in Greater Masaka Region.

Gen Muhoozi revealed: “The murders are not motivated by proprietary gain since nothing is taken from the victims. However, criminals in some few incidences use snatched and had phones of victims, to communicate to the relatives of the victims. Whatever the motive the intended effect is to cause fear, terror and apprehension in the public.”

The former chief of defence forces, explained: “They use the same killing method of hitting the victims on the head with blunt objects and killings are indiscriminate. The pattern of killing is similar; the timings are between 8pm and 10pm,by waylaying the victims and attacking vulnerable people in houses.”

Gen. Muhoozi stated: “There is need for provision of adequate logistics to intensify the operations within Masaka, Lwengo, Rakai and Bukomansimbi Districts in order to arrest the culprits and have them prosecuted.”

The minister revealed: “Senior security leaders have been tasked by the National Security Council to go to the affected areas an on spot assessment and to work out an effective plan of action with the area district security agencies in order to decisively deal with this insecurity, bring the culprits to book, and return normalcy to the affected areas.”

Gen. Muhoozi said: “I will also propose to cabinet, that Government organizes some compassionate assistance to those families that hove lost loved ones or had their people injured.”

He vowed: “We shall do whatever is possible to improve on intelligence as stated by members. However, we have deployed what we have like the cameras. We addressing other issues in the media and long term and aiming at stopping the killings.”

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anitah Among proposed: “This matter can be handled when the political leaders work with security. I direct the political leadership of Greater Masaka to go on the ground and work to have this problem solved. A special budget must be allocated to this activity.”

The speaker said: “We don’t want to hear that there is no fuel for motorcycles and vehicles. The committee on Defence and Internal Affairs should work with the security agencies and report back in two weeks.”

MPs during plenary called on government to beef up security in the region. The Leader of the Opposition, Mpuuga called for bi-partisan debate.

The leader of opposition urged: “I invite this House to consider sending the Committee on Defence Masaka because i think the community will open up to the committee.”

Bukooli Central MP, Solomom Silwanyi said recruitment of LDUs is a backward way of dealing with insecurity. “We need to use technology in fighting criminality. What happened to the security cameras around the country? These are useful in tracking criminals.”
