Schools Reopen In September

The Ministry of Education alongside key stakeholders in the Education sector has started preparations to reopen schools in a staggered form.

This follows a resolution by the government to resume learning in September for P1 -P3 and S1-S2 for 14 weeks -3 months, uninterrupted.

This learning will emphasize focal curriculum coverage with the aim of promoting learners to the next class.

The ministry of education says the new school calendar that is yet to be approved will ensure that learners conclude the academic year for 2020 by June next year2022.

Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, the Director Education Standards Ministry of Education, during a zoom meeting with education technocrats on Monday said the MOE has already released a school calendar to cater to all learners.

She says because of the covid19 pandemic, not all learners can start at once but reopening will be in a staggered manner.

She explains ”We want not only to phase but stagger the reopening, we all know that under this current spacing in covid19, almost all schools cant have their learners back at a go , we want to adapt the school calender to that phased opening, so that between now and June 2022, which is the end of the financial year, we will have had the academic year for 2021 closed ”.

Proposals As Reopening Resumes

-Ahead of reopening of institutions of learning, teachers should undergo re-orientation because of the new curriculum.

Turyagyenda says ”These teachers need to be re-oriented, so we request our colleagues, to re-orient teachers to understand the new curriculum, extract key competencies, prepare around them and teach effectively, to do it in such a way that only the core areas are taught in class .’

-Priority is given to P1, P2, P3, S1, S2 Learners since they were not considered during the previous reopening.

-MOE proposes to admit all learners above 6years to P.1 regardless of whether they passed through Nursery.

-Govt says No Boarding facilities for learners in Pre Primary and Lower Primary, therefore, should study in schools close to home.

-Vaccination of all the teachers, support staff, and students above 18 years. 

-MOE to broaden its stakeholders by including other ministries on the team among them are the ministries of ICT, Local government, office of the presidency that houses the RDCs who they say are part of the team already.
