Nasty accident

One person has been left dead and nine others injured after a truck rammed into a taxi on the Masanafu flyover along the Kampala Northern Bypass.

The accident that happened at 11:00 am involved a truck Registration Number UAZ 366G belonging to a road construction company and a commuter taxi Registration Number UAM 134Y.

Eyewitnesses at the scene say the taxi had slowed down to pick up a passenger when the truck that was a few metres behind, hit it hard in the rear.

The taxi doors immediately gave way under pressure and flew off their hinges leaving outlets through which passengers scrambled out of the taxi and onto the road while the truck continued to push and squeeze against it until the driver suddenly stopped.

Good Samaritans rushed to the scene to rescue the injured passengers, some of whom had been trapped in the wreckage. They had to pull the conductor of the taxi from under the two vehicles after he was thrown out and he is assumed dead.

Nasty accident

The truck driver who was captured by eyewitnesses has been faulted for reckless driving and inexperience because he looked young.

Boda-boda riders and pedestrians attempted to arrest the driver of the truck, but he was rescued by other Sinotruk vehicles from the same company that helped him escape.

Police had not yet arrived at the scene by the time of filing the story. However, the victims have since been rushed to health centres nearby.
