Fire has gutted a girls’ dormitory at St Andrew’s Secondary school Rubindi in Kashari north Mbarara district.
This is the second fire incident in less than a month following a fire that burnt the boys’ dormitory at the same school and students lost most of their property.
The Dormitory that accommodates more than 200 girls and over 250 beds was burnt last night as students were attending preps.
The fire however was put out with support from the school community and the learners.
Rev. Fr Felix Bikwatsizehi the School Chaplain and parish priest of Rubindi said that over two hundred girls lost their belongings in the inferno.
Bikwatsizhi has appealed to the police to conduct thorough investigations to identify and arrest the persons behind the fires.
The head teacher Robert Bayo said that no student was injured or killed in the fire and they managed to put out the fire using water from a nearby water well and sand in the compound.
Andrew Agume, the officer in charge of the Rubindi police station referred our reporter to the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson Samson Kasasira who said he had not received any updates from the officers at the scene.
The fire comes a few weeks after police released a report on the school fires that gutted four schools including the one that gutted the boy’s dormitory at the same school.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson said then that police would treat the cause of the fires as suspected arson unless otherwise proven.
The Schools burnt in the region so far are Mbarara Secondary School, Rushanje Girls School in Rwampara, Mbarara View High School Katete and St Andrews Secondary School Rubindi.
