The rate at which Ugandans are perishing in road accidents is alarming.

A recent report from the Uganda Traffic Police shows that 12 people die daily and 87 weekly from road accidents mainly attributed to recklessness and driving cars in poor mechanical condition.

On Tuesday evening, three people perished and one was injured in an accident at Kakira junction along the Jinja-Iganga highway, after a trailer crashed into their motorcycle Registration Number UET 176F.

The deceased, whose identities haven’t yet been established were riding on the motorcycle collided with the trailer registration number KBH 501C that was heading to Kampala.

Eye witnesses claim a boda boda rider identified as Bashir Mugoya, was travelling with three other passengers on his ride when he tried to dodge another motorcycle from the opposite direction, but instead rammed into a speeding trailer.

They further state that the narrow road at the Kakira junction also escalated the problem because the Mugoya failed to navigate safely.

Another eyewitness says the area is known to be a blackspot because all the humps near Kakira junction are small and lack of signposts to alert new road users on the dangers of speeding within.

The deceased were reportedly travelling from Nankoma sub-county in Bugiri district to Mukono municipality, where they had been promised casual jobs.

Mugoya, survived with major injuries and is currently nursing wounds at Jinja Regional Refferal hospital.

Mugoya explains that he was riding alongside the trailer from Iganga when he noticed another motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction, he lost control of the motorcycle and slid into the tyres of the speeding trailer, which crashed the trio.

Kiira Region police spokesperson, James Mubi, says the trailer driver (names withheld) is in custody at Kakira Central Police Station awaiting prosecution.

He has rallied road users to continuously observe traffic rules and guidelines, which he says will reduce road accidents registered along the major highways.
