Parents to pay for milk in schools
The government is all set to start providing milk to learners in pre-primary, primary and secondary schools as a means of boosting good health and development .
Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja told plenary on Thursday that the Ministry of Education has partnered with an NGO called SNV Uganda, a Netherlands development organisation that will provide subsidised milk for children at schools.
She stated that the milk provides all the necessary nutrients, like calcium, vitamin D and magnesium which are of high nutrition for both good health and development.
Nabbanja said parents will now be required to pay between Shs 10,000 and Shs20,000 for each child per term to ensure their children get daily milk at school.
She was reacting to a matter raised by Ngora County MP, Juliet Achayo, during plenary who questioned why the government is adding another burden on parents.

The compulsory milk programme will start this term in 13 local government schools in Mukono, Kampala and Wakiso and will be rolled out to the rest of the country in January next year.
The programe was first rolled out in 2015 across nine districts in western Uganda including Mbarara, Kiruhura among others where 300,000 learners from 950,000 schools benefited. It later came to a halt in 2019 and failed to resume since then.
