SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to a classic Premier League rivalry, as the Manchester derby between City and United is played at the Etihad Stadium on the afternoon of Sunday 3 October 2022.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

While the Citizens are flying high and looking a powerful machine under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, United are still finding their identity under Erik ten Hag – and will be playing for the first time in the Premier League for almost a month (having had their previous two matches postponed due to the Queen’s passing and related policing issues).

Ten Hag has admitted that the international break did not help his preparations for this derby: “I don’t have the players [while they are away with their national teams],” the Dutchman said. “What can we plan? We can plan work structures with the players who will be there. They will get a break but also have good sessions. We can work on specifics but, when 90 percent of the squad is not there, we cannot work on development. That is clear.”

Guardiola, meanwhile, has hailed the strength City have in depth – noting how the power of their bench has helped to turn games in their favour: “With this crazy schedule we need everyone. And now with five substitutions the impact from the guys with the mentality and the right position (is important).

“Normally when people come from the bench and play bad it is because they are not right here [in the mind]. They are complaining because they don’t play. But when they are there with a good impact, they can help us because the quality is there.”

Key players

Erling Haaland – The Norwegian has been an absolute beast since arriving in the Premier League, scoring 11 times in just seven games. United’s defence will need to be at its best to have a chance of keeping Haaland quiet.

Christian Eriksen – The Danish midfielder has been one of United’s best players this season, adding a range and intelligence to their passing that has been absent for many a year – but he’ll likely have to improvise with limited possession come Sunday.

Head-to-head stats

In head-to-head stats, City and United have met in 187 matches across all competitions since 1891. The Red Devils have claimed 77 wins compared to 57 for the Citizens, while 53 games have been drawn.

City outclassed United in the Premier League last season, claiming a ‘double’ thanks to a 2-0 win at Old Trafford in November 2021 and a 4-1 thrashing at the Etihad Stadium in March 2022.

Battles to watch

Pep Guardiola v Erik ten Hag – Both Guardiola and Ten Hag have been schooled in the Johan Cruyff method of coaching, with their tactical battle set to be a highly intellectual test of nerve.

Kevin De Bruyne v Bruno Fernandes – This battle of two of the Premier League’s best playmakers will be a fascinating battle, as both look to seize the initiative and dictate terms.

Joao Cancelo v Antony – While the Man City left-back is an important figure in terms of building attacks, he will also need to be sharp on the defensive side to keep a watch on the exciting Antony.
