The East African Court of Justice will commence its hearing of newly filed cases, hear appeals and deliver rulings on various cases filed against member states starting on 1st November to 30th November 2022.

According to the First Deputy Prime Minister in charge of East African Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, Uganda is now the second country within the region to host the court following Bujumbura’s turn last year.

She adds that the five cases are already set for judgement, eleven others are up for hearing while another five cases are for pretrial. She explains that the court sessions will happen at the Commercial Division of Kampala and will be preceded by Judicial officers conference slated for October 24 to 28 of this month before hearing into the cases commences.

Among cases to be heard include one involving controversial City Lawyer Male Mabirizi currently jailed at Kitalya prison and among other cases.

The court was formed to contribute to regional Integration by ensuring adherence to justice, rule of law and fundamental rights and freedoms through the interpretation and application of and compliance with the East African Community Law.
