NDA warns against unsafe Contraceptive Chinese pill after it allegedly kills young woman
The National Drug Authority (NDA) has again warned the public of a deadly Chinese contraceptive pill being sold on the black market amidst death reports.
The black market pill is packaged in a small white rectangular box with two words in the Chinese dialect written at the back translated as Levonorgestrel and Quinestrol. It has no translated instructions on use.
A search of the labels reveals that the pill contains Levonorgestrel Fast Estradiol Tablets, according to the first line. The second line describes it as a long-acting oral contraceptive tablet, while the manufacturer is shown as Zizhu Pharmaceutical Co Ltd in the lower line.
A pill that costs between 10,000 and 15,000 Shillings and is said to prevent pregnancy within 72 hours after sexual intercourse.

The NDA first banned the pill in October 2021 after the body established that the drug has life threatening components that cause blood clots, irregular bleeding, irregular menstrual periods, palpitations, heart disease or eventual death. The pill can also lead to cancer in the uterine area and infertility.
One component Quinestrol, sometimes stated as ethinylestradiol cyclopentyl is used in menopausal hormone therapy, hormonal birth control, and treatment against breast and prostate cancers.
According to NDA, the pill was found to contain high doses of hormones above the recommended dosage.
Abiaz Rwamwiri, the spokesperson says they have tried to break into the black market, but it is a complex syndicate that stretches wide.
“We even arrested one person, a boda-boda rider, but it was found that this was someone who was just delivering the pill, perhaps to a person unknown to him, and not even knowing where it came from.” He says the drug can go through 40 different hands before it gets to the final user and one cannot just walk into a pharmacy and get it, yet it’s being sold. says Rwamwiri
He says the effects can cause defects in babies: “For example, there was a baby which got pubic hair at three years and because the mother had used this pill, it was most likely to be the cause,”
The neighbouring Kenya banned the same pill 10 years after authorities realized that the levonorgestrel levels were “more than 40 times the recommended levels,” according to a report by BBC.
Over the weekend news spread of a Ugandan girl who started using the same contraceptive and died within two months from a blood clot.
The deceased only identified as Atwiine was in perfect health when she suddenly collapsed and died somewhere in Naguru as safely walked around.
Family sources say she suffered a blood clot in the lungs which could have been caused by the Chinese pill. They said ‘many girls and women have silently succumbed to death, others have been hospitalized coz of this pill,’
