The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament is being held in Zimbabwe from 18 June to 9 July. It features two groups of five teams each, with the top three teams from each group advancing to the Super Six.
The Super Six stage of the competition sees teams play three further matches against the qualifiers from the other group, with the two results against teams from their own group carrying forward from the group stage. The top two teams in the Super Six earn a place at the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India in October and November and will also face off in a final in Harare on 9 July.
Zimbabwe find themselves in Group A alongside Nepal, the Netherlands, the West Indies and the United States – they will face these opponents in Harare on June 18, 20, 24 and 26 respectively, with full ball-by-ball action LIVE on SuperSport Cricket. Group B features Ireland, Oman, Scotland, United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka.
Zimbabwe, known by the nickname ‘The Chevrons’, have warmed up for the tournament with friendly matches against Oman and Scotland on June 13 and 15 respectively, and coach Dave Houghton is confident that they will have what it takes to secure qualification and return to the ICC Cricket World Cup for the first time since 2015.
“In April we undertook a six-week fitness camp, so I am pleased to say that going into the tournament, not only have I got the full-strength side for the first time in my year’s tenure, but everybody is looking fit, lean and ready to go,” said Houghton.
“The advantage of working at home is the wonderful crowd,” added the Zimbabwe coach. “You know we have got big support, a lot of people cheering and shouting for us, which definitely adds a little bit in terms of your ability in the field, you have got that extra push from the crowds.”
Zimbabwe have won the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament three times in the past: 1982, 1986 and 1990. Other past winners are Sri Lanka (1979), United Arab Emirates (1994), Bangladesh (1997), Netherlands (2001), Scotland (2005 and 2014) and Ireland (2009), with Afghanistan the reigning champions from the 2018 edition.
