In a televised address on Thursday, President William Ruto announced the dismissal of all Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney General, sparing only the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary. The Deputy President’s office remains unaffected.
“Upon reflection and listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my Cabinet, its achievements, and challenges, I have today, in line with the powers given to me, decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney General, except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary,” President Ruto declared.
The President revealed that this decision aims to pave the way for a more effective government, committed to tackling pressing issues such as the national debt.
“I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors, political formations, and other Kenyans both in the public and private sectors with the aim of setting up a broad-based government. This will assist me in accelerating and expediting the necessary urgent and irreversible implementation of the program that we have to deal with the burden of debt,” he stated.
This decision comes after a wave of protests is sweeping through Kenya, triggered by recently dismissed controversial Finance Bill proposing tax hikes, the Gen’z’s’ movement in a wider campaign called for more accountable governance in the country with some demanding the entire government’s resignation
