National Unity Platform head Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, has hinted at participating in the upcoming protests scheduled for July 23, 2024.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, Bobi Wine praised the organizers of the walk to Parliament, describing it as a crucial move towards holding leaders accountable. While clarifying that he did not organize the protest, he did not rule out joining the demonstrators.

“I support the young people 100% and am glad to see them leading from the front, don’t be surprised if you see me there with you,” he added.

Bobi Wine called on all Ugandans, including religious and civil society leaders, to participate in the protest. He stated that collective action is needed in the fight against corruption.

“I want you, the young people, to march, but know that I’m rooting for you and I’m with you,” he said.

Bobi Wine implied that youth leadership is vital in such movements and urged them to continue their efforts with determination and courage.

His statements come after Police issued stern warnings to the public against plans to stage protests against the August House.

On Monday, the police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma explained to journalists during a press briefing that during a July 18, 2024 meeting with the protest organizers, police suggested more peaceful means of expressing dissatisfaction.

“Individuals emerged and owned the intended march to parliament. We made attempts to dissuade the organizers from what we saw as a potentially anarchic approach following a thorough security assessment regarding the feasibility of a procession.” he said

Kituuma stressed that they will not tolerate any aorta of disorderly conduct on the streets of Kampala.

President Museveni has also warned protesters that they would be “playing with fire”if they staged the an anti-corruption march to parliament.

“We are busy producing wealth… and you here want to disturb us. You are playing with fire because we cannot allow you to disturb us,” he said.

The President reminded those plotting protests on the streets to instead consult with Col Edith Nakalema who in 2019 organized an anti corruption walk from City Square to Kololo.
