Police have refuted claims that criminals stole from Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba’s official ride.
This comes after an August 9, 2024, article in the daily New Vision newspaper with a captioned headline claiming that the IGP’s vehicle had been stolen. They also claimed in the article that the vehicle was one of the IGP’s official escort vehicles, stolen early on Wednesday morning by unknown goons from Kireka police barracks.

According to the publication, the vehicle was a blue Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number UP00035. It further said that the driver, only recognized Vumba parked the ride on Tuesday and returned the following day to find the parking spot empty.

Additionally, they claimed that Rusoke Kituuma, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and told them the automobile had already been retrieved.

However, the police spokesperson has called the news paper’s allegation “exaggerated and untrue” in a statement that was made public today. They also state that the model of the stolen car was a single cabin Pick up UP000135 that serves as a service van.

He noted that a thorough investigation was launched after this event, which led to the recovery of the stolen car and the apprehension of a suspect.

According to Kituuma, there is an ongoing investigation into the matter and more information will be released in due time.
