The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a revised schedule for the general update of the National Voters Register ahead of the 2025/2026 General Elections.
Initially set to begin on January 3, 2025, and conclude on January 24, 2025, the update exercise will now start on January 20, 2025, and end on February 10, 2025.
The decision, communicated in a press release dated December 24, 2024, aims to allow more time for preparation and ensure widespread participation in the electoral process.
The EC says that the exercise is critical for first-time voters, allowing Ugandan citizens aged 18 and above, who are not yet registered, to register as voters. It will aid in facilitating registered voters to transfer to new voting locations, enable voters to check and confirm their details on the National Voters Register and allow students recently registered by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) to update their information and be assigned polling stations.
The update will be conducted daily, including weekends, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at designated update stations across the country. The Commission has urged all eligible citizens to take advantage of the extended period to register, verify, or update their information.
Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, appealed to all stakeholders to actively participate in the exercise. He particularly urged students aged 18 and above to ensure they are registered before returning to school.
The EC reiterated its mandate, under Article 61 (1)(e) of the Constitution and Sections 18 and 20 of the Electoral Commission Act, to maintain and update the Voters Register to guarantee free and fair elections.
