Police in Kawempe have unearthed a stash of 218 bags of stolen coffee hidden in a garage in Sanga Matugga, Wakiso District.

The beans, valued at a massive Shs 470 million, were discovered at the home of one Bukenya Steven, shocking residents of the usually quiet neighborhood.

The coffee, owned by Agrievorve Uganda Limited, went missing in a recent theft involving a truck diversion scheme. The culprits rerouted the truck from its journey to Nakawa, offloading the cargo into other vehicles, which eventually made their way to Luzira.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesman reveals that the operation culminated in the arrest of Juma Musisi, aka Young Mandela, who later pulled a Hollywood-style escape after being arraigned in Nabweru court. Onyango further reveals that police are hunting for him and his accomplices, including Asiimwe Allan, Kato Kiggundu, and others.

Bukenya’s wife, Nankinga Mariam, revealed the coffee was stored in their garage in December 2024 by suspects who rented the space for Shs 200,000. The stolen beans are now securely stored at Kawempe Police Station, awaiting further action.
