Police have launched an intense manhunt for a suspected group of thugs who fled in a dramatic way after one of their victims, identified them and notified the police.
The incident that happened on Tuesday, had videos circulated on social media, showing a harrier busting through a makeshift gate in a high-speed pursuit while police officers fire live bullets to deflate the tyres. Partick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson states that police was notified by one Echodu Daniel, the proprietor of a Forex Bureau at Capital Shoppers, who contacted them after spotting thugs he recognized as the culprits who had stolen valuables from his vehicle on August 23, 2024.
Echodu claimed he they stole items including Shs 23,400,000, two Apple Watches valued at Shs 3,500,000, three original land agreements, UAP insurance cards, and Best Rates Forex Bureau cards.
According to Onyango, a police team was immediately dispatched to verify the information and apprehend the suspects. However, upon sighting police, the suspects attempted to escape in a dark blue Harrier (registration number UBQ 618M).
Police took action to disable the vehicle by deflating its tires, but the suspects continued driving until they abandoned the car on Commercial Road and fled on foot.
Onyango says the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of crucial evidence, including a pair of number plates (UBN 127F), master keys, a number plate fixer, burglary tools, a power bank, clothing items, a matchbox, a black laptop bag, and a rolled stick of opium.
