The race for Kawempe North has hit fever pitch as ten aspirants lock horns in a high-stakes NUP flagbearer debate.

With the March 13 by-election looming, the pressure is on to see who will fly Bobi Wine’s party colors in the fight to replace jailed MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.

Among the contenders is Luwemba Lusswa Muhammad, once a close aide to Ssegirinya, hoping to ride on his former boss’s legacy. City lawyer Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola brings legal muscle, while Serunkuuma Salim (Mafu Mafu), a businessman and ex-contender, is banking on a second shot. Mathias Mulumba (Kikumi Kya Doola), the LC1 chair of Corner Zone, is also in the fray.

Other hopefuls include Umar Magala, Saulo Kulya Zziwa, Kakyika Fredrick, Dr. Charles Rubagumya, Eng. Ssenkungu Kenneth, and Moses Nsereko, all vying for their moment in the spotlight.

Tonight’s live debate will be 50% of the selection process, with the other half coming from a popularity survey. But before stepping onto the stage, all aspirants were forced to sign a loyalty pact promising not to run as independents if they lose.
