Police are holding a heartless mother in connection with the brutal murder and secret burial of her one-year-old daughter, Hadija Nagawa.

The woman identified as 21-year-old Zainabu Mulungi is currently in police custody on murder charges, awaiting her appearance in court.

Her woes begun on March 9, 2025, in Nalinaibi village, Nawanyago sub-county, Kamuli District after locals noticing that the child had been missing for two days. Mulungi, when questioned by concerned relatives, claimed she had taken her daughter to the hospital. However, when her whereabouts were traced, she was arrested in Kamuli Municipality, far from home.

The horrifying truth came to light when a foul odor began emanating from the backyard on the night of March 14. Family members and neighbors, driven by suspicion, uncovered a shallow grave. Upon exhumation, the remains were confirmed to be those of the missing Hadija Nagawa.

Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Michael Kasadha says Mulungi’s husband, Asuman Kabawo, who was away in Mbulamuti sub-county at the time, was left in shock after learning of his daughter’s death. He revealed that, before his departure, the child had been unwell, and they had sought medical attention together.

He commended the community’s quick response, which led to the suspect’s capture. He confirmed that Mulungi is currently being held at Kamuli Central Police Station as investigations continue into the tragic death of the child.
