Police in Kamuli have arrested a sugarcane vendor over the death of a 15-year-old pupil, Bakaki Mathias.
The deceased tragically lost his life in a violent encounter after a sugar cane dispute in Kibeto-Buyima zone, Luzinga parish, Kamuli District.
Police says that Bakaki, a student at Five Star Nursery and Primary School Luzinga, was returning home with friends when they came across a heap of sugar cane under the watchful eye of Balisanyuka Jonan. The group tried to take some cane, but Balisanyuka aggressively chased them away.
ASP Kasadha Micheal, the Busoga North Regional Spokesperson explains that Bakaki’s friends ran for safety, while he stood his ground, and in a fit of rage, Balisanyuka allegedly assaulted him, causing him to fall unconscious. The helpless boy was rushed to a nearby clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police arrested Balisanyuka, who is now facing charges related to the tragic death. Local police have launched an investigation into the incident.
ASP Kasadha confirmed the arrest and assured the public that investigations are ongoing.
