Tragedy struck in Wakiso District when a 9-year-old pupil, Nanyonga Shanitah, met a heartbreaking end after drowning in a water channel near her school, Kid’s Nest Nursery and Primary School.
The young girl had arrived at school early but had to rush back home to pick up a forgotten pen. That one small mistake turned fatal when she attempted to cross a notorious water channel, slipped, and was swept away by the raging waters.
Panic gripped the community as news of her disappearance spread. Eyewitnesses watched in horror as she struggled before being swallowed by the current. The police marine unit was called in but, at the time of reporting, her body had yet to be recovered.
As anger mounts over safety concerns, police swung into action, arresting the school director, Kibirango Esther, and the school’s Askari, Ssentongo Peter, to help in investigations.
“How could a school operate so close to a dangerous water channel without protective measures?” one furious parent questioned.
Police spokesman for Kampala Metropolitan Patrick Onyango, confirmed ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
Meanwhile, grief hangs heavy in the air as Shanitah’s family and schoolmates struggle to come to terms with the devastating loss.
