The lifeless body of 9-year-old Nanyonga Shanitah, who drowned in a treacherous water channel just meters away from her school has been retrieved and taken to the mortuary for a postmortem.

Shanitah’s final day on earth started like any other, her aunt had safely escorted her to school. But fate took a cruel turn when she rushed back home to pick up a forgotten pen. On her way back, disaster struck! She slipped into the raging waters and was swept away in seconds.

Patrick Onyango, the KMP spokesperson says the Police Marines and the local community worked tirelessly through the night, finally recovering her body this morning. It has since been taken to Mulago City Mortuary for examination.

Shanitah was a pupil at Kid’s Nest Nursery and Primary School. The school director, Kibirango Esther, and the school’s Askari, Ssentongo Peter to help in investigations.

Eyewitnesses who watched the fatal event say it was horror as she struggled before being swallowed by the current and no one could readily help her.

Police have launched an investigation, but one thing is certain, a young life has been lost, and the community is in mourning.
