In a dramatic crackdown on illegal forest destruction, the National Forestry Authority (NFA) enforcement team has arrested 10 suspects caught red-handed plundering Mabira Central Forest Reserve (CFR).
The ruthless forest mafia has been engaging in illegal logging, timber dealing, and charcoal burning, leaving a trail of destruction in Uganda’s prized rainforest.
The operation netted the following suspects including; Okech James, Mugabo Twalik (a repeat offender), Mutabazi John, Lubega Ibrahim, Motabi Hamza, Nsubuga Charles, Keleto Jingo, Sebufu Edrisa (also a known ex-con), Musigura Nkoge Monday and Atanasi Moses.
According to Aldon Walukamba, the Communications and Public Relations Manager at NFA, Police, armed with intelligence, raided Bulengeza, Namulaba, a notorious illegal logging hub inside Mabira CFR. Searches at the homes of key suspects unearthed shocking evidence, power saws, fuel, timber, and charcoal, all linked to a dangerous cartel running a multimillion-shilling forest theft racket.
NFA’s James Mununa, the Enforcement Coordinator, declared war on the culprits: “We are putting a stop to this madness. These criminals will not destroy Mabira under our watch.” he said

Investigations have uncovered an even dirtier truth, wealthy businessmen, politicians, and government insiders are funding this destruction.
NFA spokesperson Walukamba revealed that the arrest of Joseph Ecima, a key coordinator, has opened a can of worms.
“We now have leads on the masterminds behind these illegal activities. They will face justice” he vowed.
With 13 arrests in just one week, the NFA and police have sent a loud and clear message, the forest mafia’s days are numbered.
