Police have confirmed a tragic hit-and-run in Luwero district that claimed the life of a 14-year-old schoolgirl.
The fatal accident happened today, Monday morning, April 14, 2025, at around 7:30 AM in Ngogolo village, along the busy Kampala–Gulu highway.
According to police spokesperson ASP Twiineamazima Sam, the speeding Toyota with number plates UBH 003Z, silver in colour, was headed toward Kampala when the driver lost control and ploughed into young Nakito Eunice, who was walking just off the roadside.
Locals rushed to help, but sadly, the teenager was pronounced dead on arrival at Luwero Hospital. The driver, whose identity is still unknown, fled the scene, leaving behind the vehicle, which has since been impounded and towed to Luwero CPS for inspection.
Police say eyewitness statements have been recorded, and investigations are in full swing to track down the runaway driver.
“This was a fatal accident involving a minor. A case has been registered, and more inquiries are ongoing,” said ASP Twiineamazima.
The community is in mourning, as questions mount about speeding and pedestrian safety on Uganda’s highways.
The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety revealed a 6.4% rise in road crashes in Uganda for the year 2024, in the Annual Police Crime Report.
While the reduction in common traffic offenses from 528,025 cases in 2023 to 426,432 cases in 2024. the total number of road traffic crashes stood at 25,107, marking a notable increase from the previous year.
Fatal crashes: 4,434 cases (leading to deaths), serious crashes: 13,134 cases (causing major injuries) and Minor crashes: 7,539 cases (without fatalities or serious injuries).
Additionally, road crash casualties rose by 4.4%, reaching 25,808 victims in 2024 compared to 24,728 in 2023. Fatalities increased by 7%, while serious injuries rose by 1.7%.
