As millions prepare for Easter travel and festivities, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has issued a stern warning to road users to drive sober or get pulled over.
“Easter is a time of joy and reflection, but sadly, it’s also one of the deadliest times on our roads due to careless driving,” said SP Michael Kananura, the Directorate’s spokesman.
Kananura says a crackdown on reckless road usage has been launched and this will involve arrests and penalties for the culprits.
“We are intensifying road safety enforcement. There will be increased patrols, checkpoints, and strict action against unlicensed drivers, unroadworthy vehicles, drink driving, reckless road behavior, and non-compliance with route regulations.” Kananura warned.
The Traffic Directorate has also issued a list of no-go behaviors which include; no drinking and driving because alcohol ruins judgment, no speeding, being on phone while driving. Others include no use of seatbelts or helmets, disregard for traffic signs among others.
But they’re not just targeting drivers. “To passengers, Kananura has tasked them to speak out against reckless driving.
Kananura said the crackdown will also focus on unlicensed drivers, vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition, drink driving, reckless road behavior, buses deviating from designated routes, and vehicles with missing or improper number plates.
“We are intensifying road safety enforcement this Easter season. We won’t tolerate those who endanger lives.” Kananura declared.
He reminded drivers not to drink and drive, to obey speed limits, to wear seatbelts and helmets, to stay off their phones while driving, and to be extra careful near markets, schools, and pedestrian crossings.
“To passengers, speak out against reckless driving. Your voice could save lives. And to drivers, remember that every decision you make behind the wheel affects many lives—including your own,” he said.
