Police in the Kiira region have arrested Abubakari Ngobi, a 45-year-old theology teacher at Multiple Junior School in Jinja City, for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old pupil at the school.

According to the regional police spokesperson, SP James Mubi, the suspect, a resident of Walukuba West in Southern Division, is reported to have lured the victim using pancakes and a Minute Maid drink before allegedly committing the offense on the school premises on April 17.

The case has caused public outrage in Jinja and across the Busoga sub-region, with many questioning how a person entrusted with teaching religious values could be involved in such an act.

SP Mubi stated that the child has undergone a medical examination and was found to be of sound mind. He further noted that conclusive evidence links the suspect to the scene of the crime.

“Kiira Regional Police Command considers cases of sexual assault against children and women very seriously. All people intending to take advantage of girls and women by abusing them sexually, or getting involved in child or human trafficking, will decisively be dealt with using the prevailing laws of the country.”said SP Mubi.

Preliminary reports from community members suggest the suspect may have previously been involved in a similar incident in Kamuli District, but police say those allegations have not yet been verified.

The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
