The security minister Gen Elly Tumwine has warned the public against engaging in acts of violence towards security personnel saying they have the mandate to shoot at them.
Tumwine says the police, military, and LDU’s have a right to shoot to kill protesters if they are attacked.
”If you want to fight me, once we have started how I beat you does not have rules, although for police there are procedures of how you change and hiken the levels, police have a right to shoot you and kill you, if you reach a certain level of violence and you will die for nothing.He said”
He was addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala while referring to the riots that played out the past 2 days involving protesters demanding the release of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Without a vote of sympathy, Tumwine out rightly criticized those that died after engaging in running battles with security, burnt tyres on the road, looted, and hurled stones at security forces.
He said that although they sympathize with families that lost loved in the two days, violence normally leads to deaths and destruction.
Tumwine said that government will not look on as political actors supported by unnamed foreign forces are disrupting the peace.
“How can you wish that Uganda breaks up? But I can assure you that, Uganda will not be destabilized. They have openly demonstrated that they are just people who want to destabilize, burn the city, cause violence, cause death; this is who they are,” Tumwine
He said that Kyagulanyi is not the first and will not be the last presidential candidate to be arrested if they break the law.
“The arrest of one person cannot justify what has caused death, injuries, confusion causing and stopping people to enjoy their peace. The arrest of any citizen is part and parcel of society; arrests are normal. Presidential candidates, Members of Parliament, religious leaders, all respectable people are not immune to arrest the moment they break the law or commit a crime,” Tumwine said.
