The Uganda Episcopal Conference has confirmed that the departed Archbishop Emeritus of Tororo James Odongo, will be buried on Wednesday next week at the Uganda martyrs cathedral in Tororo.

This follows a program released by the chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference Rt Rev.Joseph Anthony Zziwa and the Archbishop of Tororo diocese Most Rev Emmanuel Obbo

The Burial arrangements start on Sunday 6th December 2020 with a requiem mass at Lubaga Cathedral, Kampala at 3:30 PM and conclude on Wednesday 09th December 2020 in Tororo.

 Archbishop Emeritus of Tororo James Odongo, 89, passed on Friday at Nsambya Hospital but the cause of his death has not yet been established. 

“The Lord has visited us again this morning with the sad news.
His Grace James Odongo, the Archbishop Emeritus of Tororo has passed on this morning of Friday 4th Dec 2020 at Nsambya Hospital. More details to follow. Rest in eternal peace Your Grace,” announced the Episcopal on Friday morning through their official Facebook page.

James Odongo was the fourth African Bishop in Uganda and the first African Bishop of Tororo Diocese.

Archbishop Odongo was ordained an Auxiliary bishop on February 16, 1965, and retired as Archbishop in 2007, he was living in Mbale upon retirement in 2007.

Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation from the pastoral care of Tororo Archdiocese on June 27, 2007, on account of the age limit.

He served as a priest for 51 years and as a Bishop for 43 years, 39 as a Bishop of Tororo.

He was also the first African chair of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), a position he held twice.

James Odongo and his twin brother, the late Fr Alfred Opio, were born on March 27, 1931, in Molo village, 19km along the Tororo-Mbale road in the Bukedi district.
