No rubbish Justice Jane Francis Abodo, the Director of Public Prosecutions-DPP, has thrown out over 220 case files for inmates on remand after the government failed to provide evidence pinning the suspects.
Justice Abodo lashed out at some state attorneys for sending accused persons to jail basing on scanty knowledge without carefully studying files.

“It has been realized that sometimes some state attorneys because they are young in the profession they tend to committee people to prison without enough evidence,” said justice Abodo.

She says after examining 2556 case files, it was realized that 220 cases are baseless as they have no proof to pin the accused.
This is out of 552 of the case files proofread in Masaka, 466 Kampala, 338 Jinja, and 1200 from Mbarara district.
This she says is being done to ease congestion in prisons as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abodo made the declaration while officiating at the opening of the plea-bargain session at Maluku Main Prison in Mbale City on Monday.
Recently Frank Baine, the Spokesperson of the Uganda Prisons said the overwhelming numbers of prisoners on remand was costing the taxpayer a lot of money.

He indicated that each of the 29,600 prisoners currently on remand spends 4,000 shillings per day on feeding which would be avoided if the Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS) was able to review the case backlog.
