ICU Patients Access Savings
The National Social Security Fund-NSSF is now allowing members who are suffering covid19 in an intensive care unit (ICU to partially get their savings.
This is included under the invalidity benefit of the NSSF Act that provides for a member of the fund to get their savings in the event of any physical or mental disability that may result in partial or permanent incapacity to earn a reasonable livelihood
Richard Byarugaba, the NSSF managing has asked members to reach out to them for easy access to their funds.
It is not yet clear what percentage a member is entitled to but members are supposed to submit their documents to the NSSF first to enable the Fund doctor access if they qualify for the Invalidity benefit.
“Kindly note that If our member is in ICU and medical documents are submitted, the Fund doctor handles the assessment and advises accordingly in line with the invalidity benefit. We, therefore, request that they reach out to enable us to serve them better,” says a short statement by the fund.
There has been massive demand from the fund members to access their savings, especially during the Covid19 crisis.
ICU Patients Access Savings
Since the 1st Covid 19 wave and lockdown, members have been demanding access to at least 20 percent of their savings for health reasons and survival.
However, that didn’t happen because the NSSF cited the law, saying it was not allowed to release the funds.
However, the 2nd covid 19 wave has hit harder financially with private facilities charging severe patients between 2-5 million a day for treatment.
The cumulative number of infections now stands at 67,215, recoveries 48,823 tested samples 1,228,618 while those vaccinated stands at 812,118
