Locals in the eastern district of Nakasongola are still coming to terms with circumstances under which an entire family of six people perished in their house.
The deceased including Sadik Lumu, 26 , his wife, and their four children were found dead by locals at their residence in Kaleire village in Nakasongola.
Neighbours say they woke up on Tuesday morning to a smell of burnt food emanating from their makeshift house made of tarpaulins.
They explain that after hours of waiting, they noticed that the house remained unusually shut although very little smoke seemed to be getting out through the door.
Steven Anyweine, the LC 1 Chairperson says the curious neighbours attempted to knock at the door in the afternoon but the absence of response led them to break into the house, only to find the dead members.
Anyweine says a charcoal stove with the cassava they were cooking was found inside the shelter.
Locals immediately informed police at Kaleire Police Post and Nakasongola Central Police Station and cops were sent to the scene to investigate the incident.
According to the locals, the deceased was a new member in the village who had just settled in a month ago after relocating from Nambeere village in Luwero district.
He was working at a pineapple garden belonging to one Bogere.
The night prior to his death, Lumu and his wife reportedly went on a drinking spree at a local bar in the village and returned home late and drunk.
The locals accuse the couple of negligence and immaturity because they were always drunk and unbothered by the welfare of their children.
Isah Ssemogerere, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson says that the dead bodies were transferred to Nakasongola Health Centre IV for postmortem.
Ssemwogerere says that preliminary investigations indicate that there was a charcoal stove with food on it which consumed all the oxygen supply in the tent leading to probable suffocation.
He however says investigations have commenced into the matter.
