Opposition MPs boycott plenary

A section of Opposition MPs in parliament have threatened to snub attending plenary until their colleagues in incarceration have been freed.

The National Unity Platform(NUP)MP Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya are today appearing before the Masaka High Court on fresh charges of treason and inciting violence.

They have been in custody at the Special Investigations Unit -SIU at Kireka since they were re-arrested on separate occasions shortly after being granted bail outside Kigo Prison.

Opposition MPs boycott plenary

On Wednesday,led by the Opposition Chief Whip, John Baptist Nambeshe announced they would boycott plenary today and tomorrow in protest of the continued detention of the MPs.

Nambeshe, says “And here we a position as Opposition to boycott the plenary, effective today we are going to keep away from the proceedings of the house until this pressure is mounted to even call off the house, we want you to watch the space,we mean business and we are adamant on the issue of boycott until justice is dispensed to our colleagues.”

Most of the opposition members are from the National Unity Platform (NUP), Democratic Party (DP) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) MPs attended the presser.

On Tuesday, opposition legislators led by the Leader of Opposition (LOP), Mathias Mpuuga stormed out of the house over the same issue.

The Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah and his Deputy, Annet Anita Among, and the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, David Muhoozi are meeting ahead of the plenary.
