Anita Among receives Mercedes worth 1.44billi

Amidst skyrocketing prices of commodities, Speaker of the Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, has received a brand new Mercedes Benz, courtesy of the August House, to ease her movements in the country.

According to reliable sources, the big-black toy of S-Class series, L500 L AMG Line, was flown into the country on Thursday last week, by a cargo plane.

Deputy Speaker, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa too, is set to receive his by the end of this week.

The two Germany-made rides, which the Parliament procured from the United Kingdom for the flashy Madam Speaker, Among and her Deputy, ring at UGX1.44Bn, each. The Parliament is reportedly spending over UGX2.88Bn on the two wheels, inclusive of flight charges.

Our 49-year-old Speaker, who was elected to head the 11th Parliament following the sudden death of Jacob Oulanyah, becomes one of the very first owners of the big black luxury toy.

By law, the Parliament Speaker and Deputy are entitled to ceremonial cars each, mainly used during parliamentary and state functions. They are also entitled to official cars each.

The purchase of these vehicles has met a backlash from some govt officials and the public describing it as unnecessary expenditure given the difficult economic times.
