Sipapa’s breastfeeding wife denied bail
City socialite, Oryem Charles alias Sipapa, and his wife Shamilah Nakiyimba, have been further remanded to Luzira until 10th October 2022 as the state concludes investigations into their case of aggravated robbery.
State Prosecutor Hope Lukundo informed the presiding Grade One Magistrate Makindye Court that investigations into Sipapa’s matter are still ongoing.
The duo, facing six counts of aggravated robbery, had appeared before the Makindye Grade One Magistrate Esther Adikin for mention and a bail hearing. Adikin ruled that bail is impossible because her court lacks the jurisdiction to grant it since the offenses are capital in nature and could only be tried by the High Court.
Efforts to seek bail for Sipapa’s breastfeeding wife fell on deaf ears as court declined the request by lawyers led by David Rutaro.
Rutaro pleaded with the Magistrate to grant Nakiyimba because she is a breastfeeding mother to a five-month-old baby delivered via c-section, therefore needs proper medication for the scar to heal. feels a lot of pain without breastfeeding her infant. However, in response, the Magistrate advised the couple to take the baby to prison to breast feed and also seek treatment at prison health facilities.
Speaking to Galaxy FM reporter Rashidah Nakayi on the sidelines of the matter, Rutaro revealed that the five-month-old tot was left in the care of the mother- in- law who has also since been arrested.
Sipapa’s breastfeeding wife denied bail
The baby was left in the custody of the mother in law who is arrested, so what happens to it? We applied for special consideration in the interest of the human rights of mother and baby. She needs to breastfeed and care for the baby and her operation wound is still fresh, needing treatment. But we were told to try our lack in the High Court and that is what we will do,” Rutaro said.
On bail conditions, Rutaro says Sipapa has not told them to proceed.
“We came for the mention of the case, it has been mentioned and adjourned because the state has not concluded investigations. The offences are capital and will be tried at the High Court. But our client Sipapa has not directed us to seek his bail, only for his wife,” Rutaro said.
